Something Old, Something New, Something Fused

2022 has brought new hope for many couples whose wedding plans were put on hold due to the pandemic. And that hope has certainly spread to all of us waiting to attend celebrations where we can finally wear our best threads again.

Although every wedding has its own splendour, there is something magical about fusion weddings, like the Indian-American one I recently attended. Coupling the glamour and sparkle of an Indian wedding with the charm and romance of a traditional American wedding made for an unforgettable weekend in Malibu.

Like many fusion weddings, there were two separate ceremonies, the first a beautiful beachfront  American wedding at sunset, and the second a gorgeous garden Indian wedding the next morning. There were also two receptions: one immediately following the American wedding, and one taking place the night of the Indian wedding.  Of course, with so many different events, what’s a girl to wear? If you’ve got a wedding to attend, here’s a little guide to a few styles to get anyone through the main events.

For the beachfront wedding, I opted for this Pallavi Mohan gown. I love that this western style dress comes from an Indian designer. The material is luxurious yet breathable and allowed me to perfectly transition from the breezy beach ceremony, to the cocktail hour and dinner, and to the dance floor afterward.
Indian designers making more and more western styles isn’t just a fashion trend or experiment. It’s a shift that will continue to grow, as industry caters to larger and more diverse clientele living abroad. The benefit for these worldwide consumers? Fresh styles, new materials, and different techniques with fit-to-order customization and previously unheard-of styling services, with some designers even offering design altering changes like adding sleeves and changing necklines. All of this at very reasonable prices.

For the garden wedding, I paired this Tarun Tahiliani lehenga with the iconic Sabyasachi leather belt. Nothing says traditional like a lehenga, but the chanderi silk fabric lends a contemporary look. Absent shiny embellishments and heavy embroidery, it’s versatile for so many different occasions and matches with so many different blouses in my closet (in fact, a little secret….the pictured blouse is not the original that came with the lehenga). Sabyasachi belts are all the rage, and it was just what this outfit needed to reinforce a modern look.

Finally, the night reception. Like so many Indian receptions, this one was full of sparkle, and I came dressed up and ready to dance! I was thankful for the break time between the Indian wedding and reception where we got a chance to take a nap, grab a drink, and (of course) change into another outfit!

This Shyamal and Bhumika ensemble includes a light and airy floral skirt, a delicately embroidered jacket, and tasteful ivory blouse that can pair with just about anything. I love that the different components of this outfit all work together but also fit with other outfits I own, so that I can change up looks for different events and venues. I loved this outfit so much that if there hadn’t been a break between the wedding and reception, I would have worn this to both. Its Indo-Western components, contemporary flare, and light materials make it so adaptable. Plus, I love being able to remove or add a jacket to change the look for any event.

I had such a great time at this wedding and hope you get to attend a wedding soon!
